Single day policies - some things you may wish to know

Short term car insurance for just 1 day can be very fast, easy and economical to buy. to buy  Whilst most people will take out long-term car insurance to protect their vehicle, there can be circumstances when short-term car insurance is required, often for as little as a single day. This could make your life a little easier, solve many problems and save some cash in the process. However, If you’re considering taking out car insurance for just a single day there are a few things you’ll need to know.

Why buy short-term car insurance?

Short-term insurance, or temporary cover, is often required when you need to insure someone else to drive your car. For example, if a relative comes to stay and needs to be able to travel around the local area, you might like to get them insurance so they can use your vehicle. You may wish to borrow a vehicle from a friend, or perhaps you might be going on holiday with friends but want to share the driving responsibility. Instead of taking two cars, you could insure each qualified driver on a short-term policy for one vehicle.

Periods of cover

Most short-term cover policies run from a minimum of one day to a maximum of 28 days. This provides a suitable time scale, whatever your reasons for using temporary insurance. For example, if you’re going on holiday for two weeks, you’ll probably need insurance for 16 or 17 days. The extra couple of days provide the perfect safety-net in case anything goes wrong and you need insurance for slightly longer. Meanwhile, if you’re simply moving house and need to add a friend to the insurance to help you move your belongings, a day’s cover is ideal.

How to qualify

As with long-term vehicle insurance, short-term cover is subject to conditions, and you’ll need to meet the specified requirements to qualify. In the majority of cases, you’ll need to be between the ages of 20 and 75 and have a full license from the UK or the EC . You’ll also need to have held your licence for at least 12 months. Whilst short-term insurance is also available for provisional license holders, it’s vital you buy protection from the correct source to ensure it’s valid. In addition, short-term cover can only be applied to one car and one individual. If more drivers need to be insured, or extra vehicles are needed, you’ll have to buy additional policies.

Which vehicles qualify?

The types of cars that qualify for short-term insurance vary immensely, though there are a few essential requirements. Firstly, to drive in Britain, it’s mandatory that the vehicle has a registered British number plate. In addition, whilst modified vehicles, such as those to accommodate people with disabilities, can be insured, any post-manufacturing modifications made for performance or cosmetic reasons are not allowed.

How to buy it

Simple. You'll need just the registration details of the car you want to insure. Click the link, fill in the very short quote form and if you qualify (most people do) you'll be offered at least one quote.
